NME contents page

This is the contents page for NME magazine. The background colour of the contents page is white, which is a good contrast with the black and red text as it can be seen clearly. The red text on the magazine also draws in the readers to that specific part of the contents page, therefore these could seem intriguing and important to the audience. To the right hand side of the contents page shows exactly what is featured in the magazine and short cover lines of what will be on that page and also obviously includes the page numbers. To the left hand side of the contents page their is a band index which shows all of the bands that are present in the issue of that magazine, This is a good idea as the audience might have a specific band they would like to look at, therefore the band index will clearly show if the band they want are included in the magazine and what page they are on. In the center of the NME contents page their is two images of 2 members from the band Oasis, underneath the images is the cover line "Oasis kicked off their world tour"underneath the cover line is a story snippet that the audience can clearly read which will then possibly draw them into the story which will continue on a double page spread

Vibe magazine

On the front cover of vibe, the masthead is a bold prominant light blue colour which is appealing to the eye. Underneath the masthead is the medium shot image of the celebrity Usher, the image of Usher could be representated as a role model to many people as he is seen to be a succesfull, atractive, wealthy male artist who males aspire to be and who women want to be with, therfore having usher right in the center of this issues magazine is making people want to buy it. vibe magazine is aimed around young RnB lovers, we can tell this by looking at some of the lanuage used on the front cover such as 'Swagger' and 'No1' these words are more targeted towards the yonger public around the age of 16+ we can also tell that Vibe magazine is trying to promote RnB music as some of the artists featured in the magazine are; Keri Hilson, B2K, 50 cent, Ashanti, Ryan Leslie, Nelly and Chris Stokes all these artist are well known and and famous for their RnB music genre. The insituation for this magazine is Vibe we can tell this because Vibe is also the masthead of the magzine therefore this gives us a big clue and also at the bottom of the front cover is the vivbe website 'www.vibe.com'. The front cover also has many coverlines which are all quite crowded together. however they all have a similer font style. The target audience for vibe magzine would be RnB music lovers around the age of 16+, i think the magzine is aimed towards both males and females as many females would buy the magzine just by looking at the cover celebrity due to admiration and an interest in the celebrity and also have an interest within the RnB genre which will be very similer reasons for why males would also but Vibe magazine.

Analyse Q magazine front cover

On the front cover of Q magazine, the first thing that I noticed was the prominent masthead 'Q', the masthead is white with a bright red background and underneath has the selling line a 'A different take on music'. To the right of the masthead is a centre image of Lilly Allen and a panther, underneath is the main cover line titled 'Lilly Allen & her wicked, wicked ways...' This draws the audience in as Lilly Allen is a well known celebrity and people will be intrigued to read the story/interview on her. Also Lilly Allen has the representation of a confident, attractive, outrages female solo musician which would attract the audience to buy the magazine as many people idolise Lilly and aspire to be like her also many people like to hear her opinions on other musicians and various topics so this would also attract the readers. The magazine has many cover lines that seemed to be crowded together in bold black writing, the background on the font cover is grey which is a good contrast with the image and the text. The institution for this magazine is Q, I can tell this from the masthead of the magazine .The ideology of this magazine is claiming having a different take on music then all of the other magazines out there, this is stated in the magazines selling line. The target audience for this magazine I would say are adults a who are into classic rock/rock music. I think this because the issue of the magazine is featuring artists such as U2,The Rolling stones and Queen which are quite old rock bands who have or where going on for many years. The magazine is not particularly aimed at any gender however I think more of the male generation would be attracted to this magazine.

Annalyse NME magazine cover

The front cover of NME magazine has the masthead of the 'NME' logo in the left hand corner. The logo is in a bright red colour which immediately attracts the audience towards the cover of the magazine. The masthead also shows what the main insinuation of this magazine is which is therefore NME. The magazine is set out to have the main image of Alex Turner and Miles Kane who form the band The last shadow puppets just off centre, whilst most of the cover lines take up the left hand side of the magazine however the main cover line is on top of the main image. The font of the text on the magazine is all bold and mainly in the colour black or red which also has a similar appearance to the masthead. The colour of red on the front page stands out which could have a representation to how this magazine is promoting independent music which is know to many people as the indie genre. The centre image is the main focus of the front cover as it is a photograph of the two music artists Alex Turner and Miles Kane who have formed a duet band ‘The last shadow puppets’ The image has a representation of two British successful male artists who many people idolise and see as a role model in many peoples life, therefore having these two on the font cover of this magazine will sell this current issue. The main cover line underneath the photograph also takes up a lot of space on the front cover, the main cover reads ‘The last shadow puppets’ in big bold red writing, the main cover line is the second biggest text on the front cover, this is because this is the magazines main feature story therefore they need to focus this towards the audience. Above the Main cover line in an italic font is another cover line that reads ‘first major interview as’ The language of this cover line draws the reader in as the word ‘major’ sounds to the audience like this interview is extremely important and therefore if they don’t read it they are missing out on vital information on these two celebrities. The target audience for NME would be people who enjoy or have an interest in independent music I would say the appropriate age for NME magazine would be around 16+ as some of the language in the magazine may be difficult for younger people to understand clearly. The ideology for this magazine is to promote the indie music genre, many people are involved, have an interest and extremely enjoy independent music therefore NME have a successful magazine and other products such as a website and a music channel.

Key Concepts

The media concepts can be listed in the word LIIAR
The L stands for Language- the language that is used in the media component. Newspapers and magazines all have a particular style and presentation of language that is specific to their genre and audience. The language of print-based meida is evident in the articles you read, but also in text such as captions for photographs, mastheads and advertisments.

The I stands for Institution - The people who have a role in the production process of media texts, the companies/organisations they represent and the process of production, distribution and marketing in which both are involved.

The other I stands for Ideology - Ideology is often referred to as an unconscious set of ideas, values and beliefs that a group, society or an individual believe to be true or important, and which provide a framework for a particular view of the world. Within a society there might be different ideologies at play representing different sets of social interests.

The A stands for Audience- The audience for any media product is the group that consumes it. The target audience is the group at whom the product is specifically aimed. Some media texts will aim to engage a wide mass audience, and others might aim for a niche group. Each audience (and individual members of an audience) will consume the media product in a different way. In order to be able to target the most appropiate audience, the producers of a media text will reserach using categories which include age, gender, socio-economic, sexual orientation and consumption history or preference

The R stands for Representation- Representation is the process by which images, words or sounds are used to indicate issues or debates beyond what the literally mean. The most common form of representation is that of social groups, and debates arise that analyse both the posotive and negative aspects of represention.

when designing my magazine i need to take these key concepts into consideration
