Conventions of a contents page

The contents page has numbers listed on it so the reader can turn to the exact page they want to be on. Also on a contents page there are headlines and brief descriptions of what is on that page, this is so the audience can find out what exactly that page is about. There are also images on a contents page this is often to attract the readers to the page the images are relevant to.

Conventions of a college magazine

On the front cover of a collage magazine there is a big bold Masthead which will be the name of the magazine, the titles are normally bold and plain therefore this would not attract teens and children but more towards adults, however the title still stands out to its targeted reader. There are also images on the front cover as this is a college magazine the images will mainly be related to colleges/schools this is to attract the reader in and give them a basic knowledge of what the magazine is about. The magazine also includes sub-titles and dates.
Most magazines include a;
Masthead-The name of the magazine
Dateline-Month and year of publication, often with price.
Main image-Image that takes up most of the front cover
Coverline-Give the reader an idea what is in the magazine
Main cover line- Normally large, the main one that attracts the readers
Bar code
selling line-Short, sharp, description of the titles main marketing point.

The Brief

Preliminary exercise: Using a DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasps of DTP.

Main task: The front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text used must be original, produced by you- minimum of four images.
