Kerrang double page spread

This is a double page spread from kerrang magazine. The layout for this double page spread is quite basic with the image on one side of the page and the story on the other, the overall effect of desiging a double page spread like this is that it is neat and looks well presented and also is easy for the audeience to follow. The image takes up one whole page and shows the band green day, as the main focus is on this band this means that the story on the next page is going to be complety focusing on greenday. In the image the boys from greenday are dressed in black suits all with a differnt colour tie, the colour black could be used as a representation of the 'dark rock' that kerrang like to premote. The men in the image are also wearling black eyeliner, when a male is seen to be wearing eyeliner it normally has an ideolgy of belonging to the rock genre. The text next to the image is in a black font with an orange background. The orange background is a good contrast against the dark image and will catch the audiences attention. Although the layout is set out neatly i do think it looks a bit boring and the audience may have lack of attention in reading the story when looking at it.

One thing i think this spread is lacking is a masthead, normally at the the top of the page they would be a bold masthead that instantly make the audience stop and read the page. I think if i where to see this in a magazine i would be likely to turn the page thinking that what was on show was not that interesting, however i do find the image of green day rather eye-catching as the way the greenday band members have all been dressed in black is a really good contrast to the white background on the page and the colour black could also be using the representation of the rock genre.

The main cover line on the page which reads 'Green Day get kinky with their Garage rock alter-egos'i think is a very good way of getting the audience interested the language used is quite amusing which is a lighter approach to the normal green day language which is normally quite deep and serious therefore it might intrigue the audience.

Mojo double page spread

When first looking at this double page spread the first thing i noticed was how dark it was. The double page spread is taken up by mainly one whole black and white image that takes up one full page and half of the other. The way the colouring scheme on this double page spread has been done could maybe have an ideology of the 'dark rock' which mojo normally associates it's music genre with. The only colour on this double page spread is the text which is of two colours either white or a gold/brown colour. The title which says 'American Gothic' stands out clearly against the black background and instantly catches the audiences attention. The font of the title on this double page spread looks effective as the 'American' part of the font is in bold uppercase writing that slightly slants whereas the 'gothic' part almost looks like it has been sprayed on in gold paint, both of these seem to link well with the overall gothic look of the double page spread. The layout for this spread is quite different to what you might see in other magazines, the image takes up one and a half pages leaving only half a page for text which could mean that the text is very specific to the image which obviously the editor wants us as the audience to mainly pay attention to. In the image we can see a man with a backdrop of a church, with the image been black and white this creates quite a gothic, eerie looking image which most people would find scary however, the man in the image is stood looking relaxed with his arms above his head which allows us too see views of his tattoos, the man doing this has a representation of power and and fearless which pretty much outlines what most people think about rock artists. Also tattoo's are sometimes seen as rebellious in society therefore this also adds to the representation of showing the average rock artist.

nme double page spread

When first looking at this double page spread, the bright, bold blue colour instantly draws me in and is defiantly going to make the audience stop and take notice. The layout of the double page spread looks tidy and presentable with an image of the band 'The teenagers' to the left and the cover story to the right. The title which is in bold black and all in upper case stands out and has a good contrast to the plain white background also highlighting the black text with a bright blue colour also creates an eye-catching effect. The colour scheme for this double page spread is mainly blue, black and white , however at the bottom of the cover story their is the famous Red NME logo and textbook which is there to remind the audience the institution of the magazine. The colour of blue throughout the double page spread also could have an ideology of been targeted towards the male generation. This double page spread has also used an intriguing story starter which reads "Young, dumb and full of......filthy tunes"this makes the audience want to know what the boys in this band are like, therefore i think this is a good way of getting the audience to take notice and read the story. The image used on this double page spread is very good it shows the three boy members from the band 'the teenagers' lounging about on what likes a bed, with images of half naked girls above them. This image has a representation of the average male teenager who is believed to sit about doing nothing all day, chatting with friends and maybe fantasizing about girls, therefore this image sums up what message the band is trying to give off. On top of the image in the left hand corner is a short fact file of the band, i think this is a very good idea as many people might have not heard of the band and might want a bit more information about who they are or the music work they have produced before reading the story on the following page. In the far right of the double page spread is a review by alex turner on some of the most talked about bands at that time. Other good things this double page spread has are quotations from one of the members from the band and also at the top of the page is a banner which reads 'NME loves" the audience who read NME have great respect in the musical artists that are published within the magazine therefore if they read the banner they feel that if NME loves this band then maybe i should see what they are all about.

Mojo contents page

At the top of the contents page there is the title 'mojo'which is the insitution for the magazine. The title is in a bold font and also in black which makes it stand out to the audience. Looking at the text on the page we can see that the font used is consistant throughout the contents page which makes it easier for the reader to read and follow. Different colours have been used to outline different parts of the text for example the sub-headings are in red, the page numbers are like a goldy colour and the actual content is in black. The Layout of the Mojo contents page is set out rather neatly with the images on the left hand side and the actual contents on the right, this makes it extremly easy for the reader to navigate around the magazine and also allows the reader to see everything clearly. In total there are 5 images on the contents page exluding the images of the people who have contributed to the magazine. The images show an image of Martha Wainwrite, an album cover for sea sick steve and mojo men and also a cartoon version of the kings of Leon. The images show music artists who are mainly all of a diffrent music genre therefore this could be a represenation of how Mojo magazine is versitile and offers a wide range of music. The images on the contents page look colourfull and attracted. my attention thereforw i think it will have done the same to many other readers , i also think the bright colours of the images are a good contrast to the white background. At the bottom of the contents page show the that issues contributers to Mojo magazines, there are black and white images of 3 males who have contributed and information about them and their past jobs, although this is informative to audiences who have an interesting in publishing etc i dont think many people will be that intersted in the contributions in the magazine.

Q contents page

When first looking at the Q contents page the first thing i notice is how well set out and tidy the layout looks. Down the left hand side of the contents page it has been split into two different sections, 'features' and 'every month', these are both in bold white fonts highlighted in red which will definitely make them noticeable to the audience, underneath them are the contents of the magazine and what page they are on, doing this makes it easier for reader to navigate round. The 'every month' part shows the reader what is normally in the magazine and what page it is on, this is a good thing to use as for regular readers they will be able to find out where abouts in the magazine their favourite feature is and for new readers they will know what to expect in Q's magazines. The 'Features' section shows this months features of the magazine that are new things and are not always included in the magazine also in the features section is a seperate section titled the 'Oasis special' the title is in a gold font which stands out the reast of the text on the contents page which either white, red or black. The colour gold has an ideology of been special therefore using this for the 'Oasis special' cover line has given a good impression to the reader as they will feel as though they have to read it and maybe that other magazines are not offering the same feature. On the contents page there is a main image of the band The Courteeners useing an image of this band reflects the genre that is written and interveiwd about in Q magazine. The boys in the image are dressed in jeans and t-shirts, have accesories and long hair which would be seen as a representation of the average indie/rock band and you would probally find the people who read this magazine most probally dress like that to. At the bottom of contents page there is a review box , this shows the reader the revewis included in this version of Q. There is a tagline above the reveiw box which says 'The worlds biggest and best music choice'.This is a good thing to include in the magazine as people are most like to buy and see the magazine as a better choice when chooseing a magazine if it has posotive reviews
